For a teasingly short amount of time, a mere three days, the Bushwick area of Brooklyn, New York City, tore open its low cut v-neck and exposed its vivid nature, the thriving nest of activity that is actually happening behind the deteriorated handleless door flush with the unassuming warehouse space, that in fact holds the most amazing spaces with unbelievable windows.
From the corner of Union and Metropolitan, pushing the literal boundaries of the title, down past “the border” to Cooper street, studios, venues, apartments and sincerely nice people opened their hearts and spaces to the perusing crowds of Brooklyn to create a truly fabulous occasion. On a sparkling Saturday afternoon, my friend and I started from McKibbin, to a pleasurable participating lunch at Roberta’s on Moore street. From there we spent a good few hours on a 5 block radius around Bogart street enjoying the street stands, public music (as we entered in costume, Boogie Shoes echoed through the humming streets) and a range of styled galleries, with sculpture, video, craft, drawings and everything else.
These instances suggest the pinnacle of our nature as humans. With the art and music and food and drink, the whole idea is illustrated, the ‘final destination’. What we desire is sociability, interactivity, enjoyability and indeed all of these things were accomplished. However, as the event winds up, and these glorious arenas once again lock and bolt for the privacy of the owners, one cannot help but look forward to the day that this open nature, this thorough and confident relinquishment of fearful defense does not have to be rousted by a camp counselor-esque organisation; the day that we create, and move and breath, in order to share, meet and expose ourselves to grow and progress and satisfy a new upholstered set of needs.
